Dr. Mark Downey is a dad, doctor, and public servant.
Mark grew up in York County after his family moved to the area when his father retired from the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from Bruton High School, and went on to earn a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia.
After working as an engineer, Mark answered his true calling of medicine, earning his degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completing his residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. He returned home to Williamsburg in 2001 and has spent more than two decades caring for children and families of the Historic Triangle.
Mark has built his career around listening to families, solving problems, and making sure every child has the opportunity to thrive. That same commitment led him into public service. In 2025, Mark was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, where he represents portions of York, James City and Gloucester counties and Newport News. He is currently the only physician serving in the Virginia General Assembly.
Mark Downey is running for Senate because the Peninsula deserves a leader that brings a physician's perspective and a parent's priorities to Richmond: strengthening public schools, making health care more accessible and affordable, supporting working families, improving public safety, and building an economy where the next generation can afford to live and thrive.
For Mark, public service is an extension of the work he has done throughout his career - listening to people, caring for families, and working to leave his community healthier and stronger than before.
